CONTEST

DECODING MANDALAS

CONTEST RESULTS

One mandala at the Pomona Exhibit commanded more attention than anticipated; it was the PROSPERITY MANDALA. A signed print was offered to the first person who solved the following riddle and correctly identified the object used as the source image in the creation of this piece.

CLUE: “Dig deep and listen for the chime.”

GUESSES:  Among the many guesses were angel wings, goblet, fountain, gong, dinner plate, treasure chest, diamond ring, foreign currency, pocket change, tibetan singing bowl, African trade beads, ball bearing assembly, chimes, kite, birds, US bonds, and a totem pole.

THE ANSWER: The source image is an antique, National Cash Register made of brass.

I photographed this interesting piece in the bar room, while staying at the Belvedere Mansion in Staatsburg, New York.

FUTURE CONTESTS: Because of the great enthusiasm of this event, there will be new contests seasonally. The next will be posted around the time of the spring equinox.

CELEBRATING THE NEW YEAR

1/50                                      MUSIC OF THE SPHERES               ©  JON H. DAVIS

MUSIC OF THE SPHERES is one of the newest mandalas I have created this year and it is the current enigma for you to solve. As before, the first person to accurately describe the source material from which this mandala was created will receive a signed, limited-edition print of this mandala from the artist, Jon H. Davis.   EMAIL your answer to: jonhdavis@mac.com

CLUE: Forged in the fires of creation, this object invites one to explore the tactile topography of its multi-dimensional surface. Its magical resonance

inspired me to title this piece, MUSIC OF THE SPHERES.

ANSWER: The source image is a photograph I shot of a sculpture by the artist Arnaldo Pomodoro at the Pepsico Sculpture Gardens in Purchase, NY.

This spherical mandala’s actual name is temporarily withheld. It is another enigma for you to solve. The first person to accurately describe the specific source element(s) from which this mandala was created, will receive a signed, limited-edition print of this mandala from the artist, Jon H. Davis.

CLUE: In many cultures green symbolizes hope and joy and is an antidote for fatigue and insomnia. A dewdrop is a microcosmic lens. But this image was created with another kind of lens revealing the source elements from which this mandala was created.

The winner will be announced here. One guess per person, please!

No winner. The source image is a cluster of ferns.
