The Magic and Mystique of Mandalas

JON H. DAVIS creates art through his original process of “digital alchemy,” inspired by the traditional mandalas (cosmic maps of the universe) of the Himalayas. Working with his own photographs and paintings, he transforms these images into a variety of geometric designs echoing elements of nature, seasons of change, and spirit of place. These contemporary mandalas are often infused with vibrant colors and patterns reflecting the symmetry found in the natural world, as in the petals of a lotus flower, a butterfly’s wing, or concentric ripples on the surface of a pond.

Mandalas may be decorative works, sacred art, or both. They have been used for centuries as a focal point during meditation by many ancient cultures throughout the world. Creating mandalas may also be a form of meditation. Tibetan Buddhist monks create mandalas from grains of brightly colored sand, continuing a tradition dating back to the sixth century B.C. Mandalas may facilitate healing, invoke a deep sense of calm and well-being, improve memory, and inspire creative energies.

ARTISTIC ALCHEMY

“As a digital alchemist, on a quest for a new artistic elixir, I create mandalas by balancing chaos and harmony through sacred geometry. Inspiration comes from ancient arts, modern science, and global traditions. The elements from which my works evolve are drawn from a myriad of photographs I have taken around the world, nature, and other secret ingredients which are gathered, layered, and melded together with my own method of alchemical transmutation. Offering a glimpse into the infinite, mandalas involve the imagination–referencing symbols and archetypal motifs, incorporating unexpected forms and visions–while inspiring wholeness and, quite possibly, new discovery.”
